this weekend i went to boston to see my sister in kamayan, a filipino culture show and while we were there my sister asked us (simon becca steph joyce sarah me) in the car "what do people mean when they say 'don't be a bad news bear'?"
and we were all like
what?
so apparently in boston, they have this saying "don't be a bad new bear" which means don't be the person who brings the bad news. when we asked yun's (my sister's) friends what they mean by "bear" they were unable to tell us... they just say it. we wanna know whether its like bear as in
bearing a weight or like animal bear... like a grisly bear or black bear or winnie the pooh bear.
we think someone just messed up the phrase "bearer of bad news" and made it "bad news bear" and people just started saying it.
do you use this phrase? if so, WHAT IS A BAD NEWS BEAR?!

i cant believe i missed that show!
hmm i dunno but you know i get all sayings wrong...hahhah =) yay for kamayan and de filipinos!!
i was in boston this weekend too!
for the record norman....
the expression "bad news bears" is a movie title
i think the bad news bears ==> bearer of bad news? iunno why the movie was called that. but anycase, as far as i can tell, the expression comes from the movie.
what a pensive, normanesque post..
the name of the team was "the bears". i'm from cambridge (born and raised) and i never heard anyone use that term like that...

i am reminded of the bad idea bears in avenue Q
i also thought of the bad idea bears from avenue q...but i always thought it was derived from when people say, "I come bearing bad/good/great news" so some cutesy person says... "dont be a bad news bear" *^_^*
you sure its not like...dont be a bad news bearer but with the boston accent or the way we shorten things it didnt go from bearer to bear ...or something? hahaha
i might try to go up to ny again but ..........when its warmer. b/c last time was ridiculous >=T
=D
aww that bear looks like it was decapitated! poor bear :(
i think it would be funnier if the bear's body were part of a usb key.
no idea what that meant, but i loved the picture.
i've heard of a "bad idea bear"... but not "bad news bear" =/
